Fingerprint authentication coming to next version of Android?
Users of devices running Google's Android operating system could soon use their fingerprints instead of typing in a password, an online site reported over the weekend.

BuzzFeed reported the new mobile operating system dubbed "Android M" will include native fingerprint authentication, though it added Google declined to comment for now.

"The new functionality will allow users to log in to all of the supported applications on their Android devices without entering a password," it said.

It added Google is expected to announce the feature next week at a keynote at the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco.

Android's current version is Lollipop. If Google does not break tradition, the next version would be named after a dessert whose name starts with M.

Meanwhile, a separate report on CNET said this may mean Google may launch an application programming interface (API) for fingerprint-sensing to developers.
